Summer has arrived in Bend! The first day of summer it was 32 F that night and only a few of the petunias froze. It did warm up to up 59 F that day. Now that it's the first of July, it is pushing the 90's during the day and gets to the comfortable low 40's at night.
Now that summer is here, Wil and Jean's deck garden is composed of real plants and flowers. This is due to the efforts by daughter Pam. The plants have just started blooming and in a month, they will be overflowing their containers. Sun flowers that get to six feet high have started growing along the back yard fence line. The rest of the back yard is landscaped with lava outcrops, native trees/bushes and dirt.
In May, Wil had his 84th birthday. And with his kids in Hawaii for Father's Day, Jean took him out to a birthday/Father's Day lunch at a golf course near their home. The view from the dining room was spectacular. The view was to the west towards snow covered volcanic peaks (the Three Sisters) in the nearby Cascade Mountains. In the foreground, was the golf course with a perfectly manicured green. There was an equally beautifully groomed fairway, ponderosa pines, and even an occasional golfer. The food and a locally brewed porter were good also.
Being full time in a wheeled walker makes it difficult for Jean to go shopping. Daughter Pam has resolved this issue for her. She has introduced her mother to Internet shopping. Now, a number of organizations have no need to worry about the current recession.
With the arrival of summer, Jean's quilting group and Wil's tutoring are both on hiatus. What will they do with themselves during the lazy summer months? They recently attended a barbeque at a friend's house. Jean won the big raffle prize. For July 4th, they attended a backyard barbeque and watching of fireworks at one of Pam's friends house. Give them a call and see what their plans are for the summer.
